Tube Heat Exchanger by Holmak: energy-efficient and ultra-compact

Staphorst, November 27, 2015 – The new plastic heat exchanger TSC 18 for decentral home ventilation is a true space saver and also highly energy-efficient due to its sophisticated design. With a diameter of just 180 mm, the small device by the dutch manufacturer Holmak reaches highly energy efficiencies, that otherwise can be achieved only by big central plate heat exchangers. Depending on the volumetric flow rate, more than 80 % of the exhaust air energy can be recovered. This enables the classification in energy class A+ in force on 2016 European standard EN 13141 (2015), which specifies the testing requirements for home ventilation systems. The so-called "eco-labels" are energy efficiency categories, ranging from top values such as A+ to minimum values as G.

Increasing importance of home ventilation with heat recovery
In highly insulated building shells less heat leaks, but in return no more fresh air seeps into the interior of a house.  Poorly ventilated spaces can cause headache, allergies and even asthma. Dampness and mould can give rise to dilapidations. By extensive airing with open windows a lot of valuable heating and cooling energy gets lost. The only energy-conscious alternative to open windows is using a home ventilation system with heat recovery.

Counterflow principle saves heating costs
Holmak relies on the counterflow principle. When separate supply and return air flows pass each other in opposite directions, the warm air in one duct can heat up the cold air in the other duct by means of thin, highly conductive plastic tubes. This of course also works in reverse in summer, for cooling down warm air. TSC 18 achieves thermal efficiencies of more than 80 %. This counterflow heat exchanger keeps energy loss to a minimum.

Decentral home ventilation systems are of particular interest for the renovation market. For the new tube heat exchanger only a whole with a diameter of 180 mm in the exterior wall is necessary, where the compact heat exchanger will be installed together with the complete ventilation system. As an option, the TSC 18 can be ordered with a bypass function. This function is of special interest, if the colder external air should be used for the warmer interior air.
