Investigates the common installation methods of outdoor units of residential air conditioners in Chongqing, and divides them into five types according to the number of exposure surfaces. Studies the influence of various installation methods on the inlet air temperature (evaluation index) of outdoor units through experimental tests. The results show that the less the number of exposure surface, the higher the inlet air temperature and the lower the efficiency of the heat pump. On the basis of experiment and simulation research, proposes two kinds of optimal design schemes: 1) set up a partition board to separate the supply and exhaust air at the exhaust outlet of outdoor units, 2) set up an induced pipe at the exhaust outlet of outdoor units. The experimental and CFD simulation results show that the partition board can significantly reduce the inlet air temperature, and the design with an induced pipe can make the inlet air temperature slightly higher than the ambient air temperature, which improves the performance of the heat pump.
