Taking an office building in Shanghai as an example, based on energy consumption simulation by EnergyPlus software, the two energy saving technical routes of improving the envelope performance and optimizing the HVAC system are discussed about the effect on reducing the annual energy consumption of heating and air conditioning for office buildings in hot summer and cold winter zone. The results show that the energy saving potential of the performance improvement of the envelope is small, and the economy is poor. Simply improving the heat insulation performance of the envelope does not guarantee the reduction of the annual cooling consumption of the building. A comprehensive analysis of the annual heating and cooling energy consumption should be done to determine the optimal design parameters of the envelope. HVAC system optimization has great energy saving potential and good economy. Compared with the baseline scheme, the annual cooling and heating consumption can be reduced by 34.59% and 23.43%, and the annual cost of heating and cooling can be reduced by 29.78% after using the two technical measures of natural cold source cooling and behavioral energy saving.
